The Montessori Method The Montessori teacher assumes a guiding or directing role and is thus, referred to as the Directress. The teacher prepares the environment, demonstrates the correct use of the materials, observes the progress of the child, and functions as the exemplar. It is the child who learns; motivated through the work itself. The child is free to learn because of an acquired "inner discipline" from the exposure to both physical and mental order. The Montessori Method is more than just a method of learning; it is an approach to life. School Day: The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. Monday through Friday, and concludes at 11:45 a.m., except for students in the Extended Day Program who will continue to 2:45 p.m. The Extended Day afternoon session are provided for children approximately five years old who are considered to be ready for the more advanced Montessori academic curriculum. School Year: HMS follows the Hampton City School calendar with 181 school days per year. Note: HMS does not offer pre or post school childcare. |
